Ed’s love of food and farming began at a very early age, growing up on a beef and sheep hill farm on the Isle of Bute, on the west coast of Scotland. After graduating from Glasgow University in 2011 and a stint in the Highlands, he is now established as a large animal vet and Director at Thrums Vets in Angus and Perthshire.
Working with a highly diverse beef and sheep client base, Ed is motivated by solving complex problems and finding long-term solutions rather than seeking quick and easy fixes. He holds the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Sheep Health and Production – a field he is particularly passionate about.
Ed firmly believes that ruminant livestock, and how we manage them, play a pivotal role in restoring our soils, protecting our environment and producing highly nutritious food. Working with farming families and businesses who share the same vision, he has seen how finding sustainable solutions in place of routine inputs has led to happier animals, soils and farmers.
On his family farm in the uplands of Glen Isla, Ed has a small herd of Longhorn cattle, sheep, and over 500 apple trees. He has been busy implementing regenerative practices, but feels he has only just started scratching the surface of what’s possible!
